For students with rural and financially constrained backgrounds, pursuing professional higher education can be a challenging journey. Limited financial resources, lack of guidance and restricted exposure to educational opportunities can often become significant barriers to fulfilling their aspirations.
Demonstrating how targeted financial assistance can create opportunities for deserving students, Mr Sohan Dudhe, a 19-year-old student from the Other Backward Class (OBC) community, is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Textile Design at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Bengaluru, with support under the PM-YASASVI Scheme – Top Class Education for OBC, EBC and DNT Students.
Sohan comes from the small village of Darwha in Yavatmal district, Maharashtra, and is among the first learners in his family to pursue professional higher education.
Coming from a rural background, he faced financial difficulties while pursuing education in the specialised field of design. Limited financial resources, lack of guidance regarding professional design education and limited exposure to opportunities in rural areas posed significant barriers to his educational journey.
Despite these challenges, Sohan remained determined to pursue a career in the design field. He aspired to receive quality professional education, develop specialised skills and build a better future for himself and his family. His opportunity to pursue education at NIFT Bengaluru marked an important step towards achieving these aspirations.

Through the PM-YASASVI Top Class Education Scheme, Sohan received financial assistance for higher education at NIFT Bengaluru. The support helped reduce the financial stress associated with his education and enabled him to focus on his academics, skill development and practical learning. The assistance has helped ensure that financial constraints do not hinder his pursuit of professional education.
Building Skills and Shaping a Career in Textile Design
With financial support under the scheme, Sohan is successfully continuing his Bachelor’s Degree in Textile Design at NIFT Bengaluru. He is developing professional knowledge and practical skills in textile design, preparing himself for a career in the design field.
Since receiving support under the scheme in 2024, Sohan has continued to progress in his academic journey. His story reflects how timely financial assistance can enable students from rural backgrounds to access quality professional education and pursue their aspirations with greater confidence.
The journey of Sohan Dudhe demonstrates the transformative impact of the PM-YASASVI Scheme – Top Class Education for OBC, EBC and DNT Students. By reducing financial barriers to higher education, the scheme is helping deserving students pursue professional courses, develop specialised skills and work towards a brighter future for themselves and their families.
