NFDC-National Film Archive of India, FIPRESCI-India and Pune International Centre Announce ‘Cinemas of India’ Film Festival


Three-day festival in Pune to showcase 10 acclaimed contemporary Indian films curated by Mr. Premendra Mazumdar

The National Film Development Corporation–National Film Archive of India (NFDC-NFAI), FIPRESCI-India and Pune International Centre (PIC) will organise the second edition of ‘Cinemas of India’, a three-day festival celebrating the diversity of contemporary Indian cinema from 21 to 23 August 2026 at the NFDC-NFAI Auditorium, Phase I, Law College Road, Pune.

Curated by noted film critic and writer Premendra Mazumdar, the festival will screen 10 Indian films across several languages. The festival will screen 10 films representing the linguistic, cultural and aesthetic diversity of contemporary Indian cinema. The lineup includes Adamya, directed by Ranjan Ghosh; Feminist Fathima, directed by Fasil Muhammed; Gondhal, directed by Santosh Davakhar; If on a Winter’s Night, directed by Sanju Surendran; In the Name of Fire, directed by Abhilash Sharma; Magazine, directed by Shubham Sanjay Shevade; The Lost Path, directed by Khanjan Kishore Nath; Victoria, directed by Sivaranjini; Whispers of the Mountains, directed by Jigar Nagda; and Yakasi’s Daughter, directed by Jayanta Madhab Dutta.

A key feature of the festival is its focus on lesser-heard and underrepresented Indian languages, including Magadhi, Karbi, Rajasthani and Mising, along with Bengali, Malayalam, Marathi and Hindi. The films will offer audiences an opportunity to engage with diverse cultural landscapes, lived experiences and storytelling traditions from different parts of the country.

Speaking about the festival, NFDC Managing Director Shri Prakash Magdum said that India’s cinematic landscape reflects the diversity of the country and that the festival will help audiences discover remarkable films and voices beyond mainstream cinema.

Dinanath Kholkar, Director, Pune International Centre, said cinema is a powerful medium for ideas, dialogue and cultural understanding, and the festival will encourage audiences to reflect and connect across cultures and generations.

Premendra Mazumdar, President, FIPRESCI-India, said the selection has been carefully curated to showcase the remarkable linguistic breadth of Indian cinema.

The festival aims to promote film appreciation, critical discourse and cultural exchange. Admission is free and will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Film enthusiasts, students, researchers, filmmakers and members of the public are invited to attend.
