Shimla, August 21: National Senior Citizens’ Day 2026 was organised by the Office of Controller of Communication Accounts, Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications, Government of India, Shimla, to honour the knowledge, experience and contributions of senior citizens. As many as 89 pensioners and family pensioners participated in the programme.

The event featured a range of activities focused on the health, well-being, digital empowerment and safety of senior citizens. A free health check-up camp was organised with the support of DDU Zonal Hospital, providing general health check-ups along with examinations related to the eyes, teeth and lungs, besides ECG facilities.

In view of the increasing incidents of cyber fraud, pensioners were also sensitised about cyber security, online fraud and ‘digital arrest’ scams through an awareness session conducted by officials of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The participants were briefed on precautions against cyber fraud, the need to remain alert while dealing with suspicious calls and messages, and safe practices while carrying out digital transactions.

Ayush doctors conducted a session on healthy ageing, Ayurvedic dietary practices and yoga, highlighting simple measures for maintaining good health and well-being in old age.

The pensioners were also provided information on self-generation of Digital Life Certificates and the use of the SAMPANN App, aimed at facilitating pension-related services through digital platforms.

The participating pensioners appreciated the initiative and the activities organised by the department. They said that such programmes not only provide a platform to honour senior citizens but also help them remain informed about important issues such as health, digital services and cyber security. They expressed their gratitude to the Departmen for organising the programme.
