Team from AIIMS Nagpur clinches Late Indrajit Mitra Memorial Trophy after seven-and-a-half-hour competition

AIIMS Nagpur emerged as the winner of the prestigious 29th Late Indrajit Mitra Memorial Maharashtra State-Level Undergraduate Surgery Quiz 2026, organised by the Association of Surgeons, Nagpur (ASN) at AIIMS Nagpur on August 16, 2026. The competition brought together 19 teams representing medical colleges from across Maharashtra and continued for seven and a half hours, with the participating teams facing an intense and engaging series of questions. The AIIMS Nagpur team comprising Dr. Gaurav Mahamadpurkar, Dr. Nakul Yadav and Dr. Sawmya Patibandla emerged victorious and lifted the Late Indrajit Mitra Memorial Trophy.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr. P. P. Joshi, Executive Director and CEO, AIIMS Nagpur. Dr. Subrajit Dasgupta, former Dean, NKP Salve Institute of Medical Sciences, Nagpur and Patron of the quiz, and Dr. Manorma Purvar, former Professor and Head, GMC Nagpur, attended the event as Guests of Honour. The competition provided undergraduate medical students from across the State an opportunity to test their knowledge, clinical understanding and quick decision-making skills in the field of surgery.

The event was hosted by the Department of Surgery under the leadership of Dr. Siddharth Dubhashi, Professor and Head, Department of Surgery and Dean (Student Welfare), along with Dr. Deepa Jahagirdar, President, ASN; Dr. Praveen Vairagade, Secretary, ASN; and Dr. Prachi Mahajan, Committee Chairperson. Faculty members of the Department of Surgery contributed to the successful conduct of the competition, with Dr. Divish Saxena and Dr. Nitin Sherkar serving as Quiz Masters, while Dr. Prashant Sawarkar managed the time slots and score charts. Dr. Saumya Chopra compered the event.
The successful performance of the AIIMS Nagpur team marks a notable achievement for the institute and reflects the strong academic environment and enthusiasm for learning among its medical students. The State-level quiz also provided a valuable platform for students from medical colleges across Maharashtra to come together, compete in a healthy academic spirit and deepen their interest in undergraduate surgical education.
