Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla paid floral tributes to Shri P.A. Sangma, former Speaker, Lok Sabha, at his portrait in the Central Hall of Samvidhaan Sadan  on his birth anniversary, today.

Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha Shri Harivansh; Members of Parliament; former Members of Parliament  and other dignitaries also paid floral tributes to Shri Sangma on this occasion.

Secretary - General Lok  Sabha, Shri Utpal Kumar Singh and Secretary – General, Rajya Sabha Shri P C Mody and Officers of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Secretariats also paid tributes to Shri Sangma.

Shri Sangma was a distinguished parliamentarian, able administrator and prominent leader from Meghalaya who made significant contributions to public life and the development of the North-Eastern region. Beginning his parliamentary career in 1977, he served as a Union Minister in various capacities and as Chief Minister of Meghalaya before being unanimously elected Speaker of the Eleventh Lok Sabha in 1996, becoming the first Member from the Opposition to hold the office. As Speaker, he was widely respected for his knowledge of parliamentary rules, commitment to the dignity and orderly conduct of the House, and efforts to strengthen parliamentary democracy. He also played an important role in promoting greater representation of women in legislatures and in strengthening inter-parliamentary relations. A nine-term Member of the Lok Sabha, Shri Sangma remained closely associated with the upliftment of the North-Eastern region, particularly tribal and disadvantaged communities, and was widely recognized for his contribution to the welfare of the working class and marginalized sections of society. Shri Sangma passed away on 4 March 2016 in New Delhi.

The portrait of Shri Sangma was painted by Shri Vijender Sharma. It is displayed in the Outer Lobby, Samvidhaan Sadan  and was unveiled by the then  President of India Shri Pranab  Mukherjee on 10th February 2014.
