The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Chennai Branch Office, carried out an enforcement search and seizure operation at a jewellery shop in Ambattur on September 01, 2026, seizing gold ornaments being sold without mandatory hallmarking. The operation was executed under Section 28 of the BIS Act, 2016, following the detection of non-hallmarked jewellery displayed for commercial sale in clear violation of statutory quality standards.

During the search, the enforcement team detected non-hallmarked gold jewellery across various designs and categories displayed for sale. The seized items comprised 175 mangalsutras (thalis) weighing 671.50 grams, 12 children's bangles weighing 25.02 grams, 40 earrings weighing 86.14 grams, and 10 pendants weighing 21.33 grams.

In total, 803.99 grams of non-hallmarked gold jewellery were seized under the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016. The seized jewellery has been confiscated for detailed investigation and subsequent legal proceedings. The enforcement action was carried out by officials and support staff of the BIS Chennai Branch Office with assistance from the local police.

Shri S. D. Dayanand, Head of the BIS Chennai Branch Office, stated that BIS routinely conducts market surveillance and enforcement operations to protect consumer interests and ensure that products and articles subject to mandatory BIS certification and hallmarking conform to Indian Standards. He emphasized that such enforcement actions are vital to curb the misuse of the BIS Standard Mark and Hallmark, prevent substandard goods from circulating in the market, and uphold the credibility of the BIS certification and hallmarking ecosystem.

Appropriate legal action is being initiated against the offenders under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
