LT GEN ULHAS KIRPEKAR ASSUMES APPOINTMENT OF GENERAL OFFICER COMMANDING, DAKSHIN BHARAT AREA, INDIAN ARMY

Lieutenant General Ulhas Kirpekar assumed the appointment of General Officer Commanding (GOC), Dakshin Bharat Area of Indian Army with effect from 01 September 2026.

Lt Gen Ulhas Kirpekar commenced his duties in Dakshin Bharat Area by laying a wreath at the Victory War Memorial, Chennai, reaffirming the Army’s enduring remembrance of those who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the Nation.

Commissioned into the Corps of Signals in December 1989, Lt Gen Ulhas Kirpekar is a second-generation Signals Officer and an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA). He is a graduate of the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), Senior Command, Higher Command and National Defence College (NDC) courses. He holds a Master of Technology (M Tech) in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, and a Master of Science (MS) in Information Warfare from the Naval Postgraduate School, USA.

During his distinguished career, the General Officer has had the opportunity to serve in diverse operational environments and varied terrain. He commanded a Mountain Division Signal Regiment in the Eastern Sector and a specialised intelligence unit.

The General Officer has held several important staff appointments at Directorate General of Military Operations, Directorate General of Information Systems and a Corps Headquarters in the Eastern Theatre; Project Management Organisation, Tactical Communication System; Chief Signal Officer at a Corps Headquarters in Ladakh region; Chief Signal Officer, Eastern Command; Additional Director General, Administration and Coordination at Army Headquarters; and Director General Financial Planning. He has also held instructional appointments at the Military College of Telecommunication Engineering, Mhow, and Defence Services Staff College, Wellington.

In recognition of his distinguished service, Lieutenant General Ulhas Kirpekar was awarded the Sena Medal (Distinguished) on 26 January 2023 and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal on 26 January 2025. He was appointed the 72nd Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Signals with effect from 01 December 2024.

As the General Officer Commanding, Dakshin Bharat Area, Lieutenant General Ulhas Kirpekar will oversee the operational, logistical,  administrative and welfare responsibilities of the formation and further strengthen the Army’s engagement with the civil administration, veterans, youth and the wider community across the region, as well as outreach towards the growing defence industry in the region.
