National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has achieved a breakthrough in the excavation of the 3.68-km-long tunnel on the Bengaluru–Kadapa–Vijayawada Economic Corridor (NH-544G). The tunnel is being constructed under Package-9 between Porumamilla in YSR Kadapa District and Sitaramapuram in SPSR Nellore District. The breakthrough marks a significant milestone in the construction of the tunnel. The project, with an estimated cost of Rs. 1,092.18 crore, is likely to be completed by mid-2027.

The 3.68-km-long tunnel will directly connect the two portals, avoiding the existing circuitous route and reducing the travel distance by around 17 km, while also significantly improving connectivity and transportation facilities in the hilly and forested area. The Bengaluru–Kadapa–Vijayawada Economic Corridor will also reduce the Bengaluru–Vijayawada travel distance by 110 km, save 3–4 hours of travel time, connect NH-44 and NH-16, provide access to the Hindupur and Kopparthi industrial nodes, generate direct and indirect employment opportunities, and ensure safer and more comfortable travel.

Speaking after inspecting the tunnel works, NHAI Regional Officer, Vijayawada, Shri G. Hari Krishna, IES, said that upon completion, the tunnel will stand as one of the key tunnel routes in South India and will be a significant addition to the region’s road infrastructure. He appreciated Project Director Shri Anilkumar Reddy, concessionaire Max Infra and the project staff for achieving the key milestone of tunnel excavation breakthrough expeditiously while adhering to all safety precautions. He expressed confidence that the remaining tunnel and project works would also be completed within the stipulated time with the same enthusiasm and commitment.
