Governor Applauds Sikkim’s Development and Eco-Friendly Lifestyle of Its People

Sikkim is a State with Zero Crime and 100% Literacy: Shri Om Prakash Mathur

As part of a media tour organized by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Bengaluru, a delegation of media representatives from Karnataka met and interacted with the Shri Om Prakash Mathur, Hon'ble Governor of Sikkim, today. 

Speaking on the occasion, the Governor stated that despite Sikkim being a highly sensitive region, it has maintained zero-crime rate with no crimes reported for several years. "This female-majority state comprises villages situated at altitudes above 15,000 to 20,000 feet and has approximately 5 lakh voters. Additionally, achieving significant progress in the tourism sector, more than 17 lakh people visited in 2025, and over 25 lakh tourists are expected to visit in 2027", he said.

Explaining the state's unique environmental conservation practice, he mentioned the beautiful tradition of 'Mero Rukh, Mero Santati', where a family plants 108 saplings upon the birth of a girl child and takes a photograph with the plant alongside the child every year. He said that Sikkim is the country’s first 100% natural farming state, which has strengthened rural infrastructure through complete literacy, an improved education system, and the 'Vibrant Villages' scheme. Sharing his experience in political life since 1972, the Governor expressed that a person who strives for the common people, farmers, and women's empowerment can emerge as an outstanding public representative.

The progress of infrastructure and civic amenities development in the border villages of Sikkim under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's visionary 'Vibrant Villages' scheme was also discussed during the interaction. The Governor praised Sikkim's well-organized and disciplined traffic management system and described it as a model example for other states in the country. The Hon'ble Governor answered in detail several questions asked by the journalists regarding Sikkim's development projects, geographical challenges, and future roadmap.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Indra Hang Subba, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha)  stated that Sikkim is an extremely peaceful state and there is no room for any untoward incidents here. The MP informed that the Union Government has given high priority to mega infrastructure projects, including railways, road connectivity, and national highway projects, for the all-round development of the state.

On this occasion, Shri M. Madhu, Assistant Director, PIB Bengaluru, Shri Manas Pratim Sharma, Assistant Director, PIB Sikkim and others were present.
