Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) showcased its innovative circular economy initiatives at the World Circular Economy Forum (WCEF) 2026, held on September 15 and 16 at the Mahatma Mandir Convention and Exhibition Centre in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

Hosted in India for the first time, the World Circular Economy Forum brought together policymakers, industry leaders, experts, innovators and other stakeholders on a global platform to deliberate on strategies and opportunities to accelerate the transition towards a circular economy. The two-day forum was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Gujarat and the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

Bhilai Steel Plant was among the select organisations invited to set up a stall at the exhibition held as part of the forum. The participation provided the steel plant an opportunity to present its environmental and circular economy initiatives before national and international delegates, industry representatives and other stakeholders.

The BSP stall showcased the plant’s circular economy ecosystem, highlighting initiatives focused on efficient utilisation of resources, reduction of waste, reuse and recycling. A major attraction was the model of BSP’s Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB) Treatment Plant, which showcased the initiative undertaken by the plant for the safe treatment and disposal of PCB-containing transformer oil.

The initiative highlights BSP’s efforts towards the responsible management of hazardous substances, safe disposal practices and environmental protection. The PCB Treatment Plant model drew considerable interest from visitors and delegates, particularly international participants.

Representing Bhilai Steel Plant at the forum were Uma Katoch, General Manager In-charge (Environment Management); B. Anuradha, Deputy General Manager (Environment Management); and Shalini Chaurasiya, Deputy Manager (Public Relations). They presented the plant’s circular economy initiatives and interacted with visitors and delegates at the exhibition.

The BSP stall attracted visitors from India and abroad, including foreign delegates, international experts, industry leaders, policymakers, researchers and other participants. International visitors showed particular interest in the plant’s circular economy initiatives, with the PCB Treatment Plant model emerging as one of the key attractions.

BSP’s initiatives provided an illustration of the practical application of circular economy principles in a large industrial setting, particularly in areas such as resource optimisation, waste reduction, reuse and recycling.

The forum also provided BSP an opportunity to interact and exchange knowledge with organisations and experts working in the field of circular economy. The discussions offered insights into emerging approaches, technologies and solutions aimed at promoting resource-efficient and sustainable industrial practices.

BSP’s participation in the World Circular Economy Forum 2026 highlighted its continuing efforts towards sustainable production, responsible resource utilisation, environmental protection and the development of a circular industrial ecosystem.
