The National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU), Gandhinagar, has commenced a five-day Capacity Building Programme on “Emerging Synthetic Drug Analysis” for forensic scientists from across the country. The programme is being conducted from 21st to 25th September 2026 with the objective of strengthening scientific capabilities to address the growing and evolving challenge of synthetic drugs. On the first day, the presidential address was delivered by Padma Shri Awardee, Dr. J.M. Vyas, Vice-Chancellor of NFSU.

The programme is being organized in furtherance of the Government of India’s vision of a Drug-Free India and the roadmap outlined by the Hon’ble Union Home Minister, Shri Amitbhai Shah, for strengthening the national response against narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
As part of this broader initiative, NFSU is organizing a series of six specialized capacity-building programmes from September 2026 to March 2027, covering contemporary areas related to forensic examination and analysis of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. Participants for these programmes have been nominated by Directors General of State/UT forensic science establishments and other competent authorities from different parts of the country.
The present programme is being organized by NFSU Gandhinagar, with the Centre of Excellence for Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (CoE-NDPS), NFSU, as the co-organizing centre, in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), the nodal agency for drug law enforcement in India. Participants from Central Revenues Control Laboratory (CRCL) and State Forensic Science Laboratories (FSLs) from across the country are participating in the training programme.
The programme focuses on emerging synthetic drugs, novel psychoactive substances, precursor chemicals, advanced analytical techniques, systematic examination, impurity profiling, chemical signatures and scientific reporting. The objective is to equip forensic scientists with contemporary knowledge and analytical capabilities to effectively support detection, investigation and prosecution of drug trafficking and related offences.
With its cutting-edge laboratory infrastructure, advanced analytical technologies and specialized expertise, NFSU is contributing significantly to strengthening forensic capacity across the country. Through such sustained training initiatives, the University seeks to develop a scientifically proficient forensic workforce capable of responding effectively to the rapidly changing landscape of illicit synthetic drugs and contributing to the national endeavour of building a Drug-Free India.
