The Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India has officially announced a landmark expansion of the national social security framework by enhancing the statutory wage ceiling for mandatory coverage under the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) from the existing Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 25,000 per month. Issued via an official Gazette Notification today under the provisions of Chapter III of the Code on Social Security, 2020, this progressive policy reform comes into force immediately from 17th September 2026.
This decisive measure significantly broadens the formal social security safety net, drawing millions of additional salaried workers into the mandatory purview of comprehensive retirement and welfare protection. Employees falling within the newly revised wage bracket will now secure statutory access to crucial long-term financial benefits, including robust retirement savings through the Provident Fund, guaranteed post-retirement stability via the Pension Scheme, and essential family protection through the associated Insurance coverage.
Following the immediate enforcement of this notification, all employers of establishments registered with the EPFO are requested to take urgent note of the enhanced wage ceiling. Principal employers and management teams are directed to recalibrate their payroll systems and ensure that all newly eligible employees are promptly enrolled under the statute. Timely compliance by establishments will ensure that the expanded workforce segment receives uninterrupted coverage and seamlessly accesses their rightful social security benefits.
