GSI, Eastern Region undertakes Swachhata Initiatives to promote Cleanliness and Environmental Responsibility

Kolkata, October 1, 2026:

 

The Geological Survey of India (GSI), Eastern Region, Kolkata, undertook a series of Swachhata initiatives today, to promote cleanliness, hygiene, environmental awareness and responsible waste management among its officers and staff. The activities aimed to foster a culture of cleanliness and collective responsibility while encouraging sustainable practices in the workplace and the wider community.

 

As part of the initiatives, and array of activities, including cleanliness drives, Shramdaan, cleaning and beautification of office premises, awareness programmes on sanitation and hygiene, proper waste disposal, environmental conservation activities, and the felicitation and health check-up of Safai Mitras, were organised. Officers and staff actively participated in the activities, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining a clean, healthy and hygienic workplace.

 

Special emphasis was laid on maintaining cleanliness in office premises, laboratories and common areas, promoting responsible waste management and reducing the use of single-use plastics. Plantation initiatives and environmental awareness activities were also undertaken to contribute towards creating a cleaner and greener workplace.

 

Speaking on the occasion, Additional Director General and Head of Department, GSI, Eastern Region, Shri Lalit Mohan Singh Maura, appreciated the enthusiastic participation of the officers and staff in the Swachhata initiatives. He emphasised that cleanliness should become an integral part of everyday life and workplace culture rather than remain limited to periodic campaigns.

 

As part of its environmental responsibility initiatives, GSI, Eastern Region, also organised an e-waste collection drive, encouraging citizens to responsibly dispose of discarded electronic items. The drive aimed to promote awareness about sustainable e-waste management and encourage environmentally responsible practices for a cleaner and greener environment.

 

In another initiative under the “Swachh Pathshala – Swachhata Gyan Yatra” campaign, a team from the State Unit of SU: WBAN, GSI, Eastern Region, led by DDG, Dr. Santanu Bhattacharjee visited AG Primary School, Baisakhi. With the support of Safai Mitras of GSI, Eastern Region, the initiative focused on promoting cleanliness, hygiene and environmental awareness among students and strengthening efforts towards creating a cleaner and healthier school environment.

 

The Swachhata initiatives provided an opportunity to sensitise employees and the wider community about the importance of maintaining cleanliness not only in workplaces but also in homes, schools and public spaces. The activities reinforced the message that cleanliness is a continuous collective responsibility that requires active participation and sustained efforts from every individual.
