Welcoming the gathering, Dr. Yumnam Jayanta Singh greeted the dignitaries, retired employees of the institute, faculty members, students, and technology partners and media representatives. He said that NIELIT has 56 centres across the country and highlighted that NIELIT Imphal is celebrating 38 years of its existence.

He said that over the years, NIELIT Imphal has grown into one of the important technology institutions in the North Eastern Region. Referring to the laboratories and facilities being developed at the institute, he said that NIELIT Imphal has been providing significant technological services to both the State and the nation. He also expressed confidence that the institute would continue to strengthen its role in education, skill development and emerging technologies.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Nilanjan Dey drew attention to the rapid changes taking place in the field of Artificial Intelligence. He referred to earlier predictions about an “intelligence explosion”, where machines would eventually become capable of creating even more intelligent machines. He observed that many developments which were once expected much later are already becoming a reality with the arrival of advanced AI systems and intelligent agents.

He said that developments in AI and large language models are already changing the way people learn, work and use knowledge. According to him, this change is also affecting the job market and creating a major shift in the way students need to prepare for their careers.

Prof. Dey stressed that education should no longer remain only knowledge-centric. He said that the learning process must increasingly become skill-centric, as practical skills and the ability to adapt to new technologies will be essential for students to remain relevant in a changing employment environment.

Dr. Manish Arora, in his address, said that Foundation Day gives an institution an opportunity to look back with gratitude at the milestones it has achieved, appreciate the contributions of everyone who has been part of its journey, and move forward with determination to face new challenges and opportunities.

He observed that the world is now going through a period of rapid technological transformation. Technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cloud Computing, Cyber Security, Internet of Things, Data Science and other emerging digital technologies are bringing new challenges, while at the same time opening up new opportunities. He encouraged students and institutions to prepare themselves for these changes and make the best use of the opportunities created by technology.
