Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Joins Safai Karmis in Swachhata Abhiyan 2026 at Mumbai Port

Mumbai Port Authority observed Swachhata Abhiyan 2026 at Grey Gate, Indira Dock, today, marking the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The programme was led by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, in the presence of Dr. M. Angamuthu, IAS, Chairperson, Mumbai Port Authority, and Shri Ravish Kumar Singh, IRTS, Deputy Chairman, Mumbai Port Authority.

The programme commenced with the lighting of the lamp and floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi, followed by the administration of the Swachhata Pledge. A short film showcasing the cleanliness initiatives undertaken by Mumbai Port over the past year was also screened. The Union Minister and the Chairperson felicitated the port's Safai Karmis in recognition of their contribution to maintaining cleanliness and ensuring smooth port operations.

In a significant step towards sustainable port operations, Jawahar Dweep Marine Oil Terminal, operated by Mumbai Port Authority, was declared a plastic-free oil terminal.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the importance of cleanliness in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of Swachh Bharat and appreciated Mumbai Port Authority's continued efforts towards plastic reduction and effective waste management. The Minister also interacted with Safai Karmis, listened to their experiences and attended a tea reception organised in their honour. He also dedicated the OSR facilities to the nation.

As part of the campaign, the Union Minister led a cleanliness drive at various locations within the port, including South of 18ID, OSR facilities, the sea-cleaning area, the wharf at BPX North Area and the Mooring Staff toilet facility, reinforcing the message of collective responsibility towards cleanliness.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. M. Angamuthu said that Swachhata Abhiyan provided an opportunity to recognise the valuable contribution of the port's sanitation workforce and reaffirmed the Authority's commitment to sustainable and responsible port operations.

Mumbai Port Authority reiterated its commitment to sustaining cleanliness drives across its docks, residential colonies and coastal areas throughout the year, alongside ongoing efforts to reduce single-use plastic. The Authority reaffirmed its focus on integrating cleanliness, sustainability and employee welfare into its day-to-day operations.
