IGCAR organises Tree Plantation Drive as part of the Swachhata Hi Seva 2026

Posted On: 01 OCT 2026 7:36PM by PIB Chennai

The Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam, observed the Swachhata Hi Seva fortnight from 16th September to 2nd October 2026 through a series of dedicated environmental and awareness initiatives. Glimpses of two such impactful activities are focusing on community sanitation and ecological enrichment.

Transforming Public School Sanitation

Under the “Swachhata Hi Seva 2026” initiative, focusing on the transformation of Cleanliness Target Units (CTUs) and clean public places, IGCAR undertook comprehensive sanitation improvement works at the Pudhupattinam Tamil Medium Public School, which serves approximately 800 students.

The school was facing severe challenges due to inadequate sanitation, including damaged sanitary fittings and an unreliable water supply, which compromised student hygiene and well-being. To foster a safe, clean, and healthy learning environment, IGCAR completed the following restoration works on a war footing:

•        Cleansed and sanitized unhygienic toilets.

•        Repaired and replaced damaged sanitary fittings.

•        Ensured a reliable and adequate water supply.

•        Upgraded the overall sanitation infrastructure.

The fully renovated facilities have been successfully handed over to the school management, providing dignified, hygienic toilet facilities and significantly contributing to a healthier environment for the students.

'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam'- Tree Plantation Drive

Aligning with the ecological goals of the “Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 – Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative, IGCAR organized a tree plantation drive around the DFRP Pond and the SRI & AERB building areas.

More than 100 saplings were planted to enhance green cover and promote a sustainable ecosystem within the campus. The drive was led by the Director of IGCAR, the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the Chairman of Swachh Bharat Cell and other senior officials.

The selected indigenous species are native and vital to the local ecosystem, including:

•        Kadampa Tree (Neolamarckia cadamba)

•        Naval / Indian Blackberry (Syzygium cumini)

•        Magizham / Spanish Cherry (Mimusops elengi)

•        Illuppai / Indian Butter Tree (Madhuca longifolia)

This plantation drive underscores IGCAR’s enduring commitment to environmental conservation, expanding campus green spaces, and building a sustainable, eco-friendly future for both the institution and its surrounding community.
