NIT Raipur’s New Tech: Child Growth Data to be Recorded Automatically at Anganwadis in Tribal Areas

Manual entries and internet dependency eliminated; screening time per child reduced from 5–8 minutes to under 1 minute

Neeraj Kumar Dewangan, a research scholar from the Department of Information Technology at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Raipur, has developed a novel, low-cost LoRa-assisted IoT-based framework for child growth monitoring in remote tribal Anganwadis. Conducted under the guidance of Dr. Rakesh Tripathi and Dr. Shrish Verma, with key support and guidance from Dr. N. V. Ramana Rao, Director of NIT Raipur, the Ph.D. research is titled "Design and Development of LoRa Assisted IoT Enabled Real Time Data Collection Framework for Child Growth Monitoring at Remote Tribal Anganwadis". Aditya Baghel, a research scholar from the Department of Electronics Engineering, also made valuable contributions to the practical implementation and testing of this project.

Currently, in Anganwadis across Chhattisgarh and other parts of the country, children’s height and weight are measured manually and recorded in registers or mobile applications. This traditional process is time-consuming and prone to human errors. The new automated system developed by NIT Raipur measures a child's weight and height in just a few seconds while automatically capturing their identification and attendance. Capable of operating seamlessly even without internet connectivity, this technology securely transmits data to the cloud, generating instant printouts showing the child's exact height, weight, and nutritional status.

With this modern technology, the time spent per child drops from 5–8 minutes to under 1 minute, significantly reducing the workload of Anganwadi workers. Furthermore, an integrated Artificial Intelligence (AI) model analyzes historical data from previous months to predict which children are at risk of malnutrition in the future. Field testing conducted across thousands of children in remote tribal Anganwadis yielded highly successful and accurate results. This framework will play a crucial role in enhancing child welfare initiatives by providing timely, accurate, and transparent data to Anganwadi Centers, Primary Health Centers, Nutrition Rehabilitation Centers (NRC), Village Health Sanitation and Nutrition Days (VHND), and Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK).
