The Department of Ophthalmology at AIIMS Bhubaneswar caters to approximately 230–250 patients daily, with a monthly footfall of around 5,000–6,000 patients. Among the commonly encountered eye conditions are refractive errors, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and computer vision syndrome, said Executive Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas. If left undiagnosed or untreated, several of these conditions can lead to severe visual impairment or blindness. However, many cases of vision loss can be prevented, managed effectively or treated through timely medical intervention, added Dr. Biswas.

To highlight the importance of eye health and promoting universal access to quality eye care, the department of Ophthalmology, AIIMS Bhubaneswar organised series of awareness and community-oriented activities to mark World Sight Day. A walkathon was also organised to celebrate the occasion. Gracing the occasion Executive Director of the national health institute stress upon growing concern of eye problems among the younger generation.

These young people are increasingly affected by refractive errors and computer vision syndrome. The programme encouraged young people to adopt healthy visual habits, take appropriate breaks during prolonged screen use, undergo regular eye check-ups and consult an ophthalmologist whenever they experience vision-related difficulties. The programme conveyed a strong message to society: “Love Your Eyes” and ensure that eye care is accessible, available and affordable for everyone, everywhere.
