Posted On: 16 OCT 2026 12:55PM by PIB Chennai

The United Nations declared 2026 the International Year of the Woman Farmer (IYWF 2026) to show the light on the essential roles played the women across agrifood systems, from production to trade, while often going unnoticed and unrecognized. This intended to raise awareness and promote actions to address the gender gaps and improve women’s livelihoods worldwide as women farmers are central to food security, nutrition and economic resilience. In context, the ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture celebrated the Women Farmers Day 2026 on 15th October 2026 to recognize and enhance the visibility of their contributions for the agriculture and allied sector ultimately for the food production.

42 women aquaculturists from the Kovalam village and its neighborhood who are doing fisheries related enterprises were recognized their participation in fish production and marketing. The women farmers shared their success stories in nursery rearing and operationalization of finfish seed production especially with Asian Seabass (Lates calcarifer) fish species. The farmers stated that the technological interventions of ICAR-CIBA are technically feasible and economically viable, however, needed institutional credit for meeting their capital requirements.
