At 27, Ramesh Kumar (name changed), a sanitation worker from Rajasthan, is moving towards a safer and more secure future with support under the National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) Scheme. His journey highlights the importance of workplace safety, dignity of labour and institutional support in improving the lives of sanitation workers.
Ramesh’s journey demonstrates how timely assistance and focused welfare interventions can make a meaningful difference in the lives of sanitation workers and their families.
His experience stands as an example of the role of the NAMASTE Scheme in advancing workplace safety, strengthening livelihood security and promoting dignity for those who contribute to essential sanitation services.
Coming from a financially constrained family dependent on daily wage earnings, Ramesh faced several challenges in maintaining financial stability and meeting his family’s basic needs.
His work as a sewer worker involved occupational hazards and exposure to unsafe working conditions. The lack of adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) further increased the risks associated with his daily responsibilities.
Despite these challenges, Ramesh remained determined to improve his family’s circumstances and pursue his livelihood with greater safety and dignity. Access to appropriate protective equipment was an important step towards achieving this goal.

In 2025, under the NAMASTE Scheme, Ramesh received a PPE kit and safety kit to strengthen his workplace protection. This assistance helped him access essential safety equipment for his occupational responsibilities and reinforced the importance of safe working practices in sanitation-related work.
With the support received, Ramesh is now able to approach his work with greater confidence and a stronger sense of security. Access to protective equipment has helped address important workplace safety concerns and reduce his exposure to occupational risks.
The assistance has also contributed to strengthening his livelihood security and supporting improvements in his family’s overall living conditions.
The NAMASTE Scheme reflects the Government of India’s commitment to safeguarding the health, safety and dignity of sanitation workers. By promoting access to protective equipment, improved working practices and the welfare of sanitation workers, the scheme seeks to create a safer and more dignified sanitation ecosystem.
