The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) accorded approval to a major procurement Proposal valued at approximately Rs53,866.50crore for the construction of Eight Next- Generation Corvettes (NGC) for the Indian Navy. Pursuant to this approval, the Ministry of Defence signed the contract for the construction of eight advanced warships on 02 November 2026, with Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) undertaking the construction of three corvettes. This marks another significant milestone for Goa Shipyard Limited and further reinforces its position as one of the country's leading defence shipbuilding enterprises.
GSL secured the construction of three corvettes through a competitive bidding process. The NGC project represents the largest order ever secured by Goa Shipyard Limited in its history. The signing of this prestigious contract marks a significant achievement for GSL and underscores its growing capabilities in the construction of advanced naval combat platforms. This landmark order further strengthens GSL's order book and reinforces its position as a key contributor to India's indigenous defence shipbuilding programme.
The eight NGCs will be constructed to an indigenous design developed by the Indian Navy, incorporating modern shipbuilding technologies and advanced combat systems. These state-of-the-art warships will be equipped to undertake a range of operational roles, including Anti-Surface Warfare, Anti-Air Warfare and Anti-Submarine Warfare. Their induction will significantly enhance the Indian Navy's capabilities in maritime surveillance, escort operations, deterrence, coastal defence and search-and-attack missions.
This prestigious project reflects the confidence reposed in Goa Shipyard Limited's proven shipbuilding capabilities, technical expertise and established track record in the construction of sophisticated naval platforms. The programme will further strengthen the country's indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem, generate employment opportunities and provide a significant impetus to domestic ancillary industries and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). These vessels will stand as proud symbols of India's commitment to Aatmanirbhar Bharat and the Government of India's Make in India initiative.
