The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jodhpur has successfully achieved the delivery of a baby following in vitro fertilisation (IVF) using surgical sperm retrieval in a couple facing male infertility due to congenital obstructive azoospermia. This is the first successful delivery following this technique at AIIMS Jodhpur and marks an important milestone in the institute’s efforts to provide advanced fertility care. Prof. Dr. D. N. Sharma, Executive Director, AIIMS Jodhpur, congratulated the entire treating team on this achievement and appreciated their coordinated efforts in providing advanced fertility care to couples facing infertility.
The treatment was carried out by a multidisciplinary team comprising Dr Manu Goyal, Additional Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and IVF Specialist; Dr Deepak Bhirud, Associate Professor, Department of Urology; and Dr Girish, Embryologist, under the guidance of Dr Pratibha Singh, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Dr Manu Goyal elaborated that, in this case, sperm were retrieved surgically and used for in vitro fertilisation (IVF) with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), a specialised fertility technique in which a single sperm is injected directly into an egg. The resulting embryo was then transferred to the uterus, leading to a successful pregnancy and delivery. Both the mother and baby are doing well.
Dr Pratibha Singh, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, said, “Infertility is a condition that may affect either or both partners. A timely and comprehensive evaluation of both the male and female partners is essential for appropriate treatment. With advances in reproductive medicine, several couples facing infertility can now access effective treatment options. We are committed to providing quality fertility care through a multidisciplinary approach at AIIMS Jodhpur.”
Male infertility contributes significantly to infertility among couples. Therefore, evaluating both partners is an important part of fertility treatment.
Prof. A. S. Sandhu and Dr. Deepak Bhirud from the Department of Urology provided services for the management of male infertility, including both primary and secondary infertility. These services included surgical sperm retrieval, vasovasostomy, vasoepididymostomy, microscopic varicocelectomy, orchiopexy for undescended testes, and sperm cryopreservation for young cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or radical surgery that may compromise their future fertility.
Obstructive azoospermia is a condition in which sperm are produced in the testes but cannot reach the semen due to a blockage in the reproductive tract. In some cases, this condition may be present from birth. Although sperm may not be present in the semen, it may still be possible to retrieve sperm directly from the reproductive tract through a surgical procedure. Surgical sperm retrieval, followed by IVF-ICSI, offers a treatment option for selected men with obstructive azoospermia and may help couples achieve pregnancy using their own sperm.
AIIMS Jodhpur has been providing surgical sperm retrieval and related fertility treatment services at its Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Centre for the past two years. This successful delivery highlights the importance of coordinated care involving specialists in reproductive medicine, urology and embryology.
Prof. Dr. D. N. Sharma, Executive Director, AIIMS Jodhpur, said, “This achievement reflects the dedication and teamwork of our specialists in providing advanced and patient-centred fertility care. AIIMS Jodhpur remains committed to strengthening reproductive health services and making quality, evidence-based treatment accessible to couples facing infertility. We encourage couples experiencing difficulty in conceiving to seek timely medical evaluation and consultation at our ART Centre.”
