Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Director, IIT Kharagpur, has been elected as a Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), with the Fellowship taking effect on January 1, 2027.
This prestigious international recognition acknowledges Prof. Chakraborty's outstanding contributions to scientific research and his sustained commitment to advancing scientific excellence and promoting science, particularly in the developing world.
In an official communication dated November 5, 2026, Prof. Quarraisha Abdool Karim, President of TWAS, conveyed her congratulations to Prof. Chakraborty, recognising his outstanding contributions to science and its promotion in developing countries.
The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) is an international scientific academy dedicated to advancing scientific excellence and strengthening scientific capacity in developing countries. Election to its Fellowship represents a distinguished international recognition of scientific achievement and contributions to the global research community.
Prof. Chakraborty, an internationally recognised academic and researcher, currently serving as Director of IIT Kharagpur is also an Institute Chair Professor and Sir J. C. Bose National Fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Kharagpur.
His distinguished academic career has earned him Fellowship of several prestigious national and international scientific and professional bodies, including the American Physical Society, Royal Society of Chemistry, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, India and Indian National Academy of Engineering.
His election to TWAS adds another significant international distinction to his illustrious academic career and reflects the growing global recognition of Indian scientific leadership, research excellence and innovation.
This particular recognition further strengthens IIT Kharagpur's international academic reputation and global standing, reaffirming the Institute's commitment to pioneering research, scientific advancement and meaningful contributions to the global knowledge ecosystem.
Prof. Chakraborty will be formally introduced to the Academy during the next TWAS General Conference, with details of the induction ceremony to be announced by TWAS in due course.
