The Department of Posts Releases a Commemorative Postage Stamp Celebrating 125 Years of Kodaikanal Solar Observatory

The Department of Posts is proud to release a commemorative postage stamp celebrating 125 years of the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory (KSO). Recognising the legacy of the KSO through this special stamp is a fitting tribute to one of India’s most significant scientific institutions and highlights the nation’s long-standing contribution to global science.
The Commemorative stamp was released by Shri S. Rajendra Kumar, Chief Postmaster General, Karnataka Circle in the gracious presence of Shri A. S. Kiran Kumar, Chairperson, Governing Council, IIA and Former Chairman, ISRO and other esteemed guests at Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bengaluru.

Located in the Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu, the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory (KSO), established on 1 April 1899, has been a pioneering centre for solar research in India for over a century. Operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), it holds the distinction of being the country’s longest-running astronomical observatory and maintains one of the world’s most extensive and continuous daily records of the Sun.
The Observatory’s contributions to solar physics are both vast and enduring. Over its 125 years of operation, researchers at KSO have undertaken pioneering studies on sunspots, solar flares, prominences, and the solar corona, significantly enhancing our understanding of solar activity and its influence on Earth.

This commemorative stamp honours the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory as a national treasure, celebrating its rich history, remarkable scientific achievements, and unwavering contribution to society.
The stamp is now available at Philatelic Bureaus across India and can also be purchased online at www.epostoffice.gov.in
