The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) promotes inclusive growth by ensuring that remote and underserved areas have all-weather road connectivity and are integrated into the development process. This helps reduce regional disparities and ensures the benefits of development reach all sections of rural society.
Improved road infrastructure through PMGSY roads has also led to better access to education, healthcare, and other essential services. This has resulted in improved health outcomes and overall enhancement in the quality of life for rural communities. It has contributed significantly to rural economic growth by enhancing connectivity and facilitating the transport of agricultural produce to markets. This improved access allows farmers to secure better prices and encourages increased economic activity in rural areas, thereby supporting national development.
By connecting rural populations to markets and employment opportunities, PMGSY plays a vital role in poverty alleviation. It enables diversification of livelihoods and helps people participate more fully in the economy, leading to improved living standards. The program also emphasises environmentally sustainable practices in road construction and maintenance, with measures aimed at reducing the ecological impact and ensuring long-term sustainability of infrastructure.
Since inception till 05.08.2025, a total of 8,38,611 km of road length has been sanctioned, out of which 7,83,620 Km of road length has been completed under various interventions/verticals of PMGSY.
After March 2020, a total of Rs. 74,324.36 Crore have been released till date, and a total of 1,23,595 km of road length has been sanctioned, and 1,57,666 km of road length has been completed under various interventions/verticals of PMGSY. The Budgetary allocation of the PMGSY was enhanced from Rs. 15000 Crore in the financial year (FY) 2021-22 to Rs. 19000 Crore from FY 2022-23 onwards.
A total of 3,81,395 km of road length was constructed under various ongoing interventions/ verticals of the PMGSY since inception till March 2014, i.e. over 13 years across the country.
A total of 3,79,075 km of road length has been constructed under various ongoing interventions/ verticals of the PMGSY from 1st April 2014 to March 2024, i.e. over 10 years across the country, indicating a faster pace of execution. State/vertical-wise details may be accessed at the programme website www.omms.nic.in ->Progress Monitoring ->Monthly Progress Reports ->State MPR Abstract Report.
The unit for PMGSY is a habitation and not a village. Out of a total of 1,63,351 eligible unconnected habitations (as per 2001 Census) in the Core Network in the country, 1,62,865 habitations have already been provided all-weather road connectivity under PMGSY-I, and 486 habitations are pending for connectivity across the country. State-wise details of habitations connectivity may be accessed at the programme website www.pmgsy.nic.in >Progress Monitoring > Habitations Coverage Report. The timeline for completion of ongoing projects under PMGSY-I (only Chhattisgarh), PMGSY-II, RCPLWEA and PMGSY-III has been extended till 31.03.2026. The timeline for completion of PMGSY I works in all States other than Chhattisgarh was March 2025.
