On the occasion of World Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) organised an event at the Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan, New Delhi. Over 100 government officials, industry representatives, researchers and experts took part in discussions on the standards and safety measures needed for the use of Hydrogen in India.

The event included two panel discussions on Hydrogen standards and safety at Hydrogen facilities. Representatives from the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO), Oil Industry Safety Directorate (OISD), and other research and industry organisations joined the discussions.

Participants shared their experiences and discussed how clear standards and safety measures can support the wider use of Hydrogen in India.

The discussions emphasised the need to establish clear standards for producing, storing, transporting and using Hydrogen, better testing and training to help people work safely with Hydrogen, and closer coordination between government agencies, industry and experts.

The valedictory session was graced by Chief guest Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India. Shri Akash Tripathi, Managing Director, Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), delivered the special address, while Shri Mohammad Rihan, Director General, National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), also addressed the gathering. Shri Abhay Bakre, Mission Director, National Green Hydrogen Mission, MNRE, gave the opening remarks. Shri Sujit Pillai, Scientist F, MNRE, delivered the vote of thanks.

A report titled “India’s Hydrogen Standards: Gap Assessment and Preliminary Action Framework”, prepared in association with Boston Consulting Group (BCG), was also released at the event. The report analyses the existing Hydrogen standards, identified in the country and areas that need attention and steps to address them.

The National Green Hydrogen Mission was approved in January 2023 with an outlay of ₹19,744 crore. It aims to make India a global hub for producing, using and exporting green Hydrogen and related products. The Mission targets an annual green Hydrogen production capacity of 5 million metric tonnes by 2030. It supports production, equipment manufacturing, pilot projects, research and training.
