Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has identified sewage
and industrial effluents as source of pollution which enters into river Yamuna
through 18 identified drains in Delhi stretch of Yamuna and through another
four drains discharging waste water into Agra and Gurgaon canal. CPCB monitors
the water quality of river Yamuna at various locations from Yamunotri to
Allahabad.
Cleaning of Rivers is an ongoing process and the
Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation is
supplementing the efforts of the Government of NCT of Delhi for pollution
abatement of river Yamuna by providing financial assistance to Delhi under JICA
assisted Yamuna Action Plan (YAP) Phase-III project at an estimated cost of Rs.
1656 crore. The project is to be implemented on 85:15 cost sharing basis
between the GoI and the Government of NCT of Delhi. The duration of project is 7
years. The project is scheduled to be completed in December 2018.
Five components in Rithala and Kondli region package with total cost of
Rs. 665.65 crore have been sanctioned in May, 2016. The details are as below:

Delhi Jal Board (GNCTD) is the implementing agency for
the YAP-III project and is carrying out the bidding process for the above
sanctioned projects. These projects will be implemented by Delhi Jal Board
(DJB) under the supervision of the Department of Urban Development, Government
of NCT of Delhi. Project Management Consultant (PMC) has already been appointed
by DJB to assist them in project implementation. Balance DPRs submitted by
Delhi Jal Board are in various stages of appraisal process.
Other steps include two projects, sanctioned in Sonepat and Panipat towns
at a total cost of Rs. 217.87 crore for pollution abatement of river Yamuna.
The main project components include construction of new STPs of 70 mld capacity
and rehabilitation of existing STPs of 75 mld capacity. The works are being
implemented by PHED, Haryana. In order to make Yamuna pollution free, Delhi Jal
Board is going with the interceptor sewer project targets with three major
drains, viz. Nazafgarh drain, supplementary drain and Shahdara drain to
enhance the sewage collection at Delhi.
