Environmental Clearance to Indira Sagar Project
The Environmental Clearance to the Indira Sagar Project (Polavaram Multipurpose Project) in Andra Pradesh was granted on 25.10.2005 after following due procedure as under the Environment Impact Assessment Notification, 1994.
The Government of Andhra Pradesh has thereafter proposed the construction of embankments on river Sileru and Saberi in Chattisgarh and Orissa to avoid submergence in these States, which were not considered during grant of Environmental Clearance in 2005. The construction of embankments in Orissa & Chhattisgarh requires public hearing under the provisions of the Environment Impact Assessment Notification, 2006. Public hearings have not been conducted in the States of Orissa and Chattisgarh because the State Governments of these States have objected to construction of Indira Sagar Project.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Environment and Forests (independent charge) Shri Jairam Ramesh in a written reply to a question by Dr. K. V. P. Ramachandra Rao in Rajya Sabha today.
