Central Public Works Department (CPWD), a principle engineering organization of the Government of India is all set to complete 160 years of service to the Nation. Its 160th Annual Day will be celebrated tomorrow at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee will be gracing the Annual Day Programme of CPWD tomorrow i.e July 12, 2014. Minister of Urban Development, Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu will also attend the programme being organized to recall the origin and growth of the CPWD during the long journey of the last 160 years.
Life Time Achievement Award (1), Director General’s Medals 8) and Certificates of Merits for Best Projects (12) will be presented on the occasion.
Established on July 12, 1854, the CPWD has to its credit construction of prestigious buildings like Rashtrapati Bhawan, North and South Blocks, Parliament House and Lutyen’s Delhi in the early 20th Century besides massive construction in Delhi soon after Independence of the country. During the year 2013-14, CPWD has executed projects worth Rs.10,000 crores. Several major projects like those of Indian Institutes of Technology at Gandhi Nagar, Bhubaneswar, Mandi, Patna, Jodhpur, central universities in different states, Parliament Annexe Building and extension of Supreme Court building in New Delhi etc., are in advanced stage of construction.
All new constructions of CPWD are being undertaken with ‘green features’. The organization is committed to adopt minimum three-star GRIHA rating to most of its projects. CPWD has undertaken reforms to achieve total e-governance for ensuring transparency, web based project monitoring system, On-line enlistment of contractors, e-tendering, call centres for maintenance etc.
CPWD currently has a total workforce of 32,000 including 5,400 civil engineers, 2,100 electrical and mechanical engineers, 360 architects and 170 horticulturists.
