In order to promote Cashew export, the Government has been continuously assisting the Cashew Export Promotion Council of India through Five Year Plans.  In the XI Five Year Plan, the Cashew Export Promotion Council of India was provided an assistance of Rs.9.02 crore for upgrading processing facilities. Similarly, for the XII Five Year Plan (2012-2017) the CEPCI has been sanctioned Rs.26 crores for modernization, diversification, Process Mechanization, Automation of Cashew Processing Units, quality up-gradation and Food Safety Certifications.  In addition, the Ministry of Commerce & Industry has put in place various schemes namely Market Development Assistance (MDA), Market Assistance Initiative (MAI), Assistance to State for Development Export infrastructure and Allied Activities (ASIDE), Vishesh Krishi and Gram Upaj Yojana, Focus Product Scheme, Focus Market Scheme, Town of Export Excellence etc. to boost export of agri products which includes cashew industry also.

As regard steps to boost production of cashew, various cashew development programmes being implemented under NHM for the last three years and the current year are:

(a)    New plantation development of cashew with high yielding varieties

(b)   Replanting of old and senile gardens owned by Corporations with high yielding varieties.

(c)    Rejuvenation of existing cashew plantations by adopting improved farming practices.

(d)   Technology demonstration in farmers field & institutional farms.

(e)    Production and distribution of planting materials by promoting model cashew nurseries and its accreditation.

(f)     Publicity for crop promotion and technology dissemination.

(g)    Training Programme for farmers and extension workers on new technologies.

Research on increasing productivity of cashew is been conducted by the Directorate of Cashew Research, Puttur, Karnataka under ICAR and cashew research stations at State Agricultural Universities.

During the last one year, no fresh request was received for setting up of a Cashew Board. Earlier, since, the Ministry of Agriculture has not agreed to the merger of the Directorate of Cashewnut & Cocoa and Cashew Export Promotion Council of India and as the Cashew Industry too was not in favour of a Cashew Board, the Government had decided to drop the proposal to set up a separate Cashew Board.

The information was given by the Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Ministry of Commerce & Industry Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman in Lok Sabha today.
