From
time to time Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has received requests from
various sports federations for grant of recognition as National Sports
Federations (NSFs). The requests thus received generally fall in the following
categories:-
i.
Indigenous
sports popular in some regions of India.
ii.
Hybrid
format of various sports played abroad.
iii.
Modified
format of various martial art sports.
iv.
High
cost sports disciplines which are played in India occasionally at a few places.
The
matter has been examined in the Ministry and with a view to promoting and
giving due acknowledgement and importance to sports having regional spread, it
has been decided with the approval of the competent authority to consider
granting recognition to sports federations of certain indigenous sports
discipline as Regional Sports Federations (RSFs) subject to the following
conditions:
i.
The
sports disciplines must be popular in a region/state and played in one or more
states.
ii.
The
sports should have been played in the region for at least last 10 years.
iii.
The
RSFs seeking recognition from the Govt. should have conducted championships in
all the categories namely Senior, Junior & Sub-Junior.
iv.
In
case there is an international body for a sport discipline, the recognition of
the said body would be necessary. In case there are several bodies in the
international level for the same sports, and if, more than one RSF applies for
recognition, the Govt. shall take a decision in the matter and the reasons for
that will be recorded in writing.
v.
One
of the conditions for recognition as NSFs, i.e. the Federation should have
affiliated units in 2/3rd of the State/UT’s will not be applicable
for grant of recognition as RSFs.
vi.
There
shall be only one RSF for each sport.
vii.
Federations
of only indigenous sports will be considered for recognition as RSFs.
For
remaining sports disciplines, the present guidelines for grant of recognition
to NSFs will continue.
