English Rendering of PM’s remarks at the handing over of homes at Ilavalai North-West Housing Project site, Jaffna, Sri Lanka on 14 March, 2015
This is a unique model of construction. This is an Owner-driven Reconstruction project. Originally this idea was started in Gujarat after 2001 earthquake. And when there was a Tsunami in Sri Lanka, the high-power delegation from Sri Lanka came to Gujarat. They wanted to study how to do reconstruction. And for that when they came to Gujarat, they found this Owner-driven project. They were so excited. And I am happy that today here this Owner-driven reconstruction project is implemented.
The plan is to construct 27000 houses under this project, we wish to rehabilitate 27,000 families. This means it is an effort to create the future of more than 50,000 children of these 27,000 families.
These homes are not merely of brick and stone walls. These are not merely a building by any craftsman. This is a type of effort that will bring India and Sri Lanka close. This is a humble effort to be a part of troubled families in Sri Lanka and Jaffna, extend a helping hand to them and bring happiness to their lives.
The house where the Pooja is being held and which is being released, I had the chance to meet the family. I asked the little girl of the family how she felt. She was visibly excited to see her own house. I asked her what she wanted to be in her life. Her reply reflected a great understanding and responsibility. That little girl told me that she wanted to be a teacher.
India has made thousands of homes. We have a great satisfaction about that. But that little girl’s response makes me think that while we will only be making the houses, the girl’s living in these houses, when they become teachers they will be making the lives of lakhs of people.
I congratulate all the people who are receiving their own houses today. I pray to God that they may be able to have a happy life in their new homes, with new dreams and make great progress in life. Their children may be well educated and contribute to serving their nation, Sri Lanka. My best wishes to all of them.
We will take forward the work of the Second Phase where 45,000 houses will be constructed. 26,000 homes have been completed and the rest of the houses will be completed soon. I want to assure the people of Jaffna about this. The work will begin in full swing in Central Yuva Province where 4000 houses are being made.
I once again give my wishes to the people of Jaffna for a very happy life. I assure you from my end and on behalf of India that we will always support you in your efforts for progress.
This is my last public programme during my two day visit to Sri Lanka. And I am glad that this last programme of my trip was meant to wipe the tears of the affected people. It is a programme about hope and renewed faith for those living in difficult times. This programme has given me immense satisfaction.
My best wishes to all of you.
Thank You.
