Votes Polled - Seats Won : Overview of the Western states in the 1999 Elections : Election Backgrounder-35
Of the 76 seats in the States of Goa, Gujarat and Maharashtra, the Bharatiya Janata Party got 35 seats in the 1999 elections, whereas the Indian National Congress won 16 seats in Gujarat and Maharashtra and drew a blank in Goa. In Maharashtra, besides BJP and the INC, the Shiv Sena won 15 seats polling 16.86% of the votes and the Nationalist Congress Party won six seats polling 21.58% of the votes. In Goa, the Goa Vikas Party polled 0.34% of the votes but failed to win any seat. The details party-wise and seat-wise for the three States are given below:-
