General Elections 1999 – Overview of Kerala : General Elections-2004 : Backgrounder-44
Kerala has a total of 20 Lok Sabha seats. In the 1999 General Elections, both Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Indian National Congress (INC) won 8 seats each followed by MUL which won 2 seats. The Kerala Congress (KEC) and the Kerala Congress (M) (KECM) managed to win 1 seat each. Of the total 1,53,77,976 votes polled, the INC secured 60,51,905 votes followed by CPM with 42,90,986 votes, MUL 8,10,135 votes , KEC 3,65,313 and KECM 3,57,402 votes. Percentage-wise, the INC secured 39.35% of the votes polled followed by CPM which secured 27.90%, the MUL 5.27%, KEC 2.38% and the KECM 2.32%.
