Railways Participate in Commonwealth Games 2010 in a big way
The Indian Railways, winner of the first “Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar’ instituted by the Government of India, always takes lead in promoting sports in the country. Continuing its pride of place in the country’s sports arena, more than 90 sportspersons from Indian Railways will be participating in the Commonwealth Games 2010 being held in Delhi from 3rd to 14th October, 2010. Railways contingent in the Indian squad is perhaps the biggest contingent from a single organization in the country. Railway sportspersons have been participating in prestigious national as well as international competitions like Asiad, Common Wealth Games, Olympics and bringing laurels to the nation. With a galaxy of promising and outstanding sports persons on its roll, since the inception of Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) in 1928, Indian Railways have always been striving hard to take up the new challenges and are very hopeful for a spectacular show in this mega sports event.

In the last Commonwealth Games 2006 held in Melbourne, Australia, Railway players won three Gold, two Silver and One Bronze medals in different individual events. The Indian Women Hockey Team which consisted of players mostly from Railways also won Gold at this event. Indian Railways players have been winning medals regularly since 1966 in all the Commonwealth Games both in individual and team events except in the year 1986. Recently Railways’ Wrestler, Shri Sushil Kumar won the Gold Medal in World Wrestling Championship held in Moscow last month.

Railways has sixteen Padamshree, three Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, five Dronacharya Sammaan, six Dhyanchand Sammaan and 134 Arjun Puraskar to its credit which have been awarded to its sports persons.

Sportspersons from Indian Railways participating in Athletics in Men Section are : S/Shri B. G. Nagraj, Ritesh Anand , V.B. Biniesh, Jithin Paul, Bibin Mathew, Sandeep Batham, P. Muthuswamy, Maha Singh, R. Maheshwari, Amarjeet Singh, Hari Shanker Roy, Gajanan Upadhyay, Bhartinder Singh, Joseph Abraham and Ashwani. And in the Women section: S. Geetha, Priya P.K., Arjina Khatun, Ashwini AC, Sini Jose, Priyanka Panwar, Sushma Devi, Jhuma Khatun, O. P. Jaisha , Lalita Babar, Preeja Sreedharan, Sudha Singh, Priyanka Singh Patel, Krishna Poonia, Manpreet Kaur, Patwant Kaur, Saraswathi, Manju Bala, Prajusha M. A., Reshmi Bose, Sahana Kumari, G. G. Promila, Sushmita Singha Roy.

Sportspersons participating in Archery are Ms. Dola Banerjee and Ms. L. Bombayla Devi.

Sportspersons participating in Aquatics (Diving) are: S/Shri T. Hari Prasad, Himanshu Tiwari, S. Ravi Kumar Singh and Ms. Hrutika Shriram and Aquatics (Swimming) are: S/Shri Sandeep Sejwal, Tarun Tokas, Praveen Tokas, Arjun J.P. and Merwyn Chen.

Sportspersons taking part in Shooting event are: Ms. Suma Shirur and Ms. Anisa Sayyed. The names for Cycling event are: S/Shri Rajendra Bishnoi, Harpreet Singh, Amandeep Singh, Amrit Singh, Dayala Ram Saran, Prince H. S., Rakesh Kumar, C. Rajesh, Ms. Renubala Devi and Ms. Sunita Devi. S/Shri Amandeep Singh, Manoj Kumar, Dilbag Singh and Paramjeet Samota will be participating in Boxing.

The names of Railway persons in Women Hockey Team are: Ms. Deepika Murty, Joydeep Kaur, Binita Toppo, Subdhra Pradhan, Asnuta Lakra, Kirandeep Kaur, Saba Anjum, Surinder Kaur, Th Chanch Devi, Jasjeet Kaur, Mukta P. Barla, and Deepika Thakur.

S/Shri Anil Kumar, Rajender, Ravinder, Sushil Kumar, Nar Singh yadav, Sanjay Kumar, Anil Mann and Dharmender Dalal will be taking part in the Wrestling Category. Shri Ashish and Shri Partha Mondal are participating in Gymnastics Category. Shri Omkar Otari, Ms. Swathi Singh, Ms. Renu Bala and Ms. Srishti Singh will be participating in Weightlifting event. Ms. Kiranjit Kaur will be participating in Net Ball.
