Over 100 leading national and international companies of the world are participating in the expo.
National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneruship and Management (NIFTEM) organised a Business Forum “New Vistas in Food Processing”.
The Minister of Food Processing Industries, Sh. Subodh Kant Sahai has stated that food processing industry promotes vital linkages and synergies between industry and agriculture on one side and strengthening food security on the other. He was inaugurating a three day International Food and Drink Expo India 2010 in New Delhi today.
He said, agriculture in India continues to be a powerful engine for livelihood, economic growth and social transformation. He maintained that in order to achieve a GDP of over 8% the agriculture has to grow at the rate of at least 4%. Food processing is regarded as the sunrise sector of the Indian economy in view of its large potential for growth. There is vast potential for private sector to develop the infrastructure in food processing sector. This will enable employment generation, wealth and income creation. Reduction of agriculture wastages is the key area to achieve this. Food processing sector can make India a major global player for marketing and supply of processed food. Despite being a large producer of agriculture products, India process around 10% of the overall agriculture production. The Minister said, his Ministry is gearing up resources for a vigrant food processing sector in the country.

The Business Forum organised by National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneruship and Management (NIFTEM ) is in the process of stitching together the various factes of the food industry from production to retail. NIFTEM focussed on two key issues at the forefront of the food processing industry, can food be your medicine – functional and nutraceutical foods and food supply chain management. Industrial innovation and development of new products has resulted in fast growth of functional and Nutraceutical foods.
