NIA Files Charge-Sheet against SIMI Activists

          An FIR in Crime No. 257/2008 dated 19.06.2008 was registered at Mundakayam PS, Kottayam District, Kerala under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967 against 30 Students’ Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) activists on the basis of a complaint that a secret training camp was organised by them at Thangalpara, Wagamon during Dec, 2007.  The case was initially investigated by the local Police and later Crime Branch Kottayam conducted the investigation.

 

                On receipt of credible information that the said case purely related to terrorist activities and having inter-state ramifications, Govt of India, Ministry of Home Affairs  directed National Investigation Agency(NIA) to take up the investigation of the said case.  National Investigation Agency re-registered the case as NIA Crime No. 04/2010 on 21.01.2010 and investigation was carried out by a team of officers of the NIA.

 

                The NIA team through systematic investigation completely worked out the case and established clinchingly the involvement of 30 hard core SIMI activists belonging to various states in the case.(04 belong to Kerala, 09 to Karnataka, 09 to Gujarat, 07 to Madhya Pradesh and 01 to Uttar Pradesh).  They are all very active cadres of Students’ Islamic Movement of India(SIMI), a proscribed terrorist organisation.

 

                Investigation has revealed that in and around Nov 2007, Office bearers and functionaries of SIMI, a banned organisation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967 entered into a criminal conspiracy in Choral, Indore, Madhya Pradesh and other places to conduct training camps for their active cadres.  Accordingly, they have conducted camps at Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, etc.  From 10.12.2007 to 12.12.2007, they organised a secret training camp at Thangalpara, Wagamon within the limits of Mundakayam Police Station, Kottayam (Kerala). 

 

                NIA teams conducted investigation at various places at Bangalore, Hubli, Indore, Ahmadabad, Jharkhand, Kerala etc and examined a number of witnesses.  Evidence clearly established the involvement of 30 hard core SIMI activists in the case. They were involved in  physical training, arms training, firing practices, manufacture of bombs/petrol bombs, motor bike racing, rope climbing etc practices in the camp.  They have also conducted “Jihadi” classes in the camp.  The secret training camp was conducted with an intention to train the participants to advocate, incite and abet unlawful, terrorist activities, disrupt communal harmony and causing threat to the sovereignty and integrity of the country,thereby waging war against lawfully established Govt of India.

 

                They are all liable to be prosecuted for the offences u/s 120 (B), r/w Sec 122, 124 (A) & 153(A) r/w 34 of IPC, Sec. 10(a) (i) & Sec.13 (1) (a) of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act1967, Sec. 25 & 27 of the Arms Act 1959 and Sec.3 & 4 of the Explosive Substances Act 1908. NIA  filed a chargesheet yesterday accordingly in the NIA Special Court at Kochi, Kerala.

 

                Out of the 30 accused, 29 SIMI activists were arrested and they are now lodged at the Sabarmati Central Jail, Ahmadabad.  They are involved in various terrorist cases reported in the country including Ahmadabad serial blast, 2008.  One accused namely Abdul Sattar @ Mansoor of Kerala is abroad and Proclamation Warrant and Look Out Notice were issued against him.  Another 07 SIMI Cadres of Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, etc are at large and investigation will continue against them. 

 

The 30 SIMI activists who are being charge sheeted are:
