The property at 26, Alipur Road, was acquired by the Government of India in 2003 and was dedicated to the nation as ‘Dr. Ambedkar National Memorial’ on 6.12.2003. The Government now proposes to suitably develop this Memorial.

The Centenary Celebrations Committee, constituted to observe 1990-91 as the Birth Centenary year of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, had recommended establishment of a Dr. Ambedkar National Public Library at Delhi. The Government has allotted about 3 acres land at Janpath to establish a Centre in Dr. Ambedkar’s name, tentatively titled ‘Dr. Ambedkar National Centre for Social Justice’, including, inter-alia, a National Public Library. It is in this context that the High level Committee has been set up.
