Categorisation of Cities
‘32’

 

The census of India classifies towns & cities in terms of population size. The Census of India classifies cities in the following categories:

 

            Class-I   : population 1 lakh and above

            Class-II  : population 50,000 - 99,999

            Class-III : population 20,000 - 49.999

            Class-IV : population 10,000 - 19,999

            Class-V  : population   5,000 -   9,999

            Class-VI : population below 5,000

Under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, 3 categories of cities have been identified as per norms/criteria mentioned as under:
