The Government has announced the Dronacharya Awards, Dhyan Chand Awards and Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar for the year 2012, here today.
A
large number of nominations were received for these awards this year, which
were considered by Selection Committees. While the Selection Committee for Dronacharya Award was headed by Shri Aslam
Sher Khan, former Olympian, Selection Committees of Dhyan Chand Award and Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar were headed by
Shri P.K. Deb, Secretary (Sports).
Based on the recommendations of the Committee and after due scrutiny,
the Government has approved to confer awards upon the following sportspersons /
coaches / organizations:
A: Dronacharya

Ordinarily not more than 5 Dronacharya
awards could be given in any calendar year. However, taking into consideration
that this is the year of Olympic Games and Paralympic
Games and there has been immense contribution of coaches in the improved
performance of the
sportspersons, the Government has decided to increase the number of Dronacharya Awards from 5 to 8 for the current year.
Taking
into account the outstanding contributions of Shri B.I. Fernandez, Cuban Boxing
Coach in the performance of the Indian Boxers in the international sports
events including mega events such as Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games and
Asian Games, Dronacharya Award will also be conferred
upon Shri B.I. Fernandez. He is the first foreign coach to receive Dronacharya Award.

Awards are given every year to recognize and reward excellence in sports. Dronacharya Award
is given to coaches for producing medal winners at prestigious international
sports events. Dhyan Chand
Award is given for life time contribution to sports development and Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar, introduced
from 2009 with a view to recognizing the contribution made to sports
development by entities other than sportspersons and coaches, is given in four
categories, namely, community sports development, promotion of sports academies
of excellence, support to elite sportspersons and employment to sportspersons.
Apart from a statuette and
a citation, Dronacharya and Dhyan
Chand Awardees will receive a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh each. Entities
selected for Rashtriya Khel
Protsahan Puruskar will be
given Trophy and Citation.
The awardees will receive their awards from His
Excellency the President of India at a specially organized function at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on August 29, 2012.
