Integrated River Basin Management
Under the National Water Quality Monitoring Programme of Central Pollution Control Board, the water quality is monitored at 3 locations along the river Pamba and 2 locations along the river Bharathapuzha in Kerala. In both the rivers, water quality is meeting the prescribed standards for key parameters of Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD). Faecal coliform levels, however, exceed the norms at some locations. This was stated by Shrimati Jayanthi Natarajan, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Environment and Forests, in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today.

The Minister further stated that a project for abatement of pollution of river Pamba in Kerala has been sanctioned at a cost of Rs. 18.45 crore under the National River Conservation Plan (NRCP). The project includes interception & diversion of sewage, sewage treatment plant, bathing ghats, community toilets, public participation etc. An amount of Rs 2.78 crore has been released to the State Government for implementation of the project. No proposal, however, has been received by this Ministry for the abatement of pollution of the river Bharathapuzha under NRCP, the Minister added.
