Missing Monuments

After undertaking the Performance Audit of Archaeological Survey of India, the Comptroller & Auditor General (CAG) in its report submitted to Parliament on 23 August, 2013 has reported that 92 monuments/sites are missing/ untraceable.

Based on this report of the CAG, field offices were asked to conduct a detailed verification of each monument under their jurisdiction reported as missing by the Audit team. Necessary information has been received from the field offices of the ASI and it is revealed that out of 92 monuments, 65 monuments cannot be treated as missing or untraceable. The monuments which have been submerged under reservoirs, encroached upon or affected due to rapid urbanization were also shown as missing by the Audit team.  The position in respect of these 92 monuments/sites after verification by ASI, is as under-

 

(i)     Monuments Physically existing

(ii)   Monuments that have been submerged   under dams/reservoirs

(iii) Monuments under encroachment

(iv)  Monuments affected due to   urbanization

(v)    Monuments yet to be verified by the field offices

(vi)  Monuments not traceable after verification
