Lalu Prasad – A profile
Shri Lalu Prasad took over as the Union minister of Railways here today. Earlier on May 22, he was sworn in as a Union Cabinet Minister, With this, his first-ever Ministerial stint in the Centre has begun.

Born on June 11, 1948 at Phulwaria, Distt. Gopalganj (Bihar), Shri Lalu Prasad is B.A. (Hons.) and LL.B. from the University of Patna. He has been a political and social worker and a lawyer. He has held several positions as Member of Parliament (6th Lok Sabha – from March, 1977 to August, 1979), Member, Bihar Legislative Assembly (two terms) from 1980-89, Leader of the Opposition, Bihar Legislative Assembly from Januay-November, 1989, Chairman, Library Committee, Bihar Legislative Assembly, Convenor, Committee on Public Undertakings, Bihar Legislative Assembly, Member, 9th Lok Sabha from December, 1989 to April, 1990, Member, Bihar Legislative Council (1990-95), Chief Minister, Bihar (1990-97), Member, Bihar Legislative Assembly(1995- 98), National President, Janata Dal (January, 1996-July, 1997), National President, Rashtriya Janata Dal (July, 1997 onwards), Member, 12th Lok Sabha, March, 1998-April, 1999), Member, General Purposes Committee, Lok Sabha, Member, Committee on Home Affairs and its Sub-Committee for the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (March, 1998-99), Member, Bihar Legislative Assembly (2000-March 2002), elected to Business Advisory Committee , Member, Committee on Home Affairs, Member, Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Rural Development and Leader, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Rajya Sabha (April 2002 onwards). Member, 14th Lok Sabha (May 17, 2004 onwards).

Shri Lalu Prasad Yadav has written several articles in newspapers and journals on contemporary socio-political issues.

As a grass-roots political worker and social engineer, he has been trying to helping the disadvantaged sections of society, both in Bihar and the country. Constantly trying to bring about socio-political changes in the country, he is helping the poor, the down trodden and the havenots.

He has also been taking active part in social, cultural, literary and artistic activities of schools, colleges, universities and other institutions, a special interest lay in reading books on thinkers and revolutionaries. He is very fond of writing, debating, music and dance. He has been taking keen interest in sports activities, clubs and recreation. He was elected President, Bihar cricket Association in 2001. He has been associated with the Sports Clubs in Chhapra, Patna and other cities in Bihar. Has been taking part in football, wrestling, cricket, kabaddi, Badminton and other indoor games. As a student, he was General Secretary, Patna University Students’ Union, 1970-71, President, Patna University Students’ Union, 1973-74. He was also associated with the Janata Party. Lok Dal and the Janata Dal.

He has visited a large number of countries in Europe and Asia.
