Backgrounder
Following 10 standards are notified by the Bureau of Indian Standards on Biodegradable plastics.
(a) IS/ISO 14851: 1999 entitled “Department of the ultimate aerobic biodegradability of plastic materials in an aqueous medium of plastic material in an aqueous medium – method by measuring the oxygen demand in closed Respirometer”
(b) IS/ ISO 14852: 1999 entitled “Determination of the ultimate aerobic biodegradability of plastic material in an aqueous system- method by analysis of evolved carbon dioxide:;
(c) IS/ISO 14853:2005 entitled “ Plastics – Determination of the ultimate aerobic biodegradability of plastic material in an aqueous system- method by measurement of biogas production.
(d) IS/ISO 14855-1: 2005 entitled “ Determination of the ultimate aerobic biodegradability of plastic material under controlled composting conditions method by analysis of evolved carbon dioxide (Part-1: General Method)
(e) IS/ISO 15985: 2004 entitled “Plastic s – Determination of the ultimate anaerobic biodegradability of plastic under controlled composting conditions- method by analysis of evolved carbon dioxide (part- 2 General Method)”;
(f) IS/ISO 15985: 2004 entitled “Plastics – Determination of the ultimate aerobic biodegradability and disintegration under high- solid anaerobic digestion conditions – methods by analysis of released biogas”;
(g) IS/ISO 17556: 2003 entitled “Plastics- Determination of degree of disintegration of plastic materials under defined composting condition in pilot scale test”;
(h) IS/ISO 17556: 2003 entitled “Plastic – Determination of ultimate aerobic biodegradability in soil by measuring the oxygen demand in a Respirometer or the amount or carbon dioxide evolved”;
(i) IS/ISO 20200: 2004 entitled “Plastics – Determination of Degree of disintegration of plastic marital under simulated composting conditions in a laboratory scale test”
(ii) IS/ISO 17088:2008 entitled “Specification for Compostable Plastics”.
