12,000 SCHOOL CHILDREN FORM HUMAN CHAIN AROUND INDIA GATE
SMT. SHIELA DIKSHIT AND SHRI VILLAS MUTTEMWAR JOIN CHILDREN TO CREATE AWARENESS ABOUT UTILISING RENEWABLE SOURCES OF ENERGY
The Initiative of Shri Villas Muttemwar, Minister for Non Conventional Energy Sources to observe 20th August as “Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas” on the occasion of former Prime Minister late Shri Rajiv Gandhi’s Birthday, got off to a grand start with about 12,000 school children forming human chain around India Gate today. The young citizens full of enthusiasm and zeal were joined by Smt. Shiela Dikshit, Chief Minister of Delhi, Shri Muttemwar and Shri Oscar Fernandez, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Statistics and Programme Implementation.
‘Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas’ is being observed by the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources (MNES) all over the country in keeping with the dream of former Prime Minister to take the country into the 21st century through the rapid development and deployment of new technologies, for sustainable development. School children are participating in rallies, in forming human chains and in spreading the message of renewable energy in every nook and corner of their districts. In addition, essay, painting and debate competitions are being organized on topics covering the entire gamut of renewable energy. Later in the day, Department of Post in association with MNES is brining out a special stamp for the occasion, which is being released by the Hon’ble Prime Minister.
The Ministry is laying special focus on utilizing renewable sources of energy in view of big gap between demand and availability of energy from conventional sources. As there is insufficient and erratic supply of energy in a large number of rural households workable solution to meet their needs require involvement of local communities particularly in remote and far-flung areas. It is therefore anticipated that the intensive awareness campaign being launched on “Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas” today will help in harnessing renewable sources like solar, wind, hydro, biomas etc. for betterment of the lives of the common men.
