Trade Unions representation in ILO

The representation of Central Trade Union
Organizations in the Indian delegation to the International Labour Conference
(ILC) is dependent upon their certified membership strength. While the
representation of a particular Trade Union in the workers’ group is decided by
the Government on the basis of their strength, their nominees are decided by
the respective trade unions. Stating this in a written reply in the Lok Sabha,
the Minister of Labour and Employment, Shri K. Chandrasekhar Rao said that the
Government of India received an invitation from the ILO for a tripartite
delegation comprising representatives of the State, the Employers and the
Workers to the ILC held from 31st May to 16th June, 2005. A
tripartite delegation was, accordingly, sent to attend the conference.
In reply to another question Shri
Chandrasekhar Rao said that BMS, INTUC, CITU, HMS, AITUC and UTUC (LS) were
nominated to represent India in the ILC for the current year. He said that as
per the latest General Verification of Trade Union Membership (as on
31.12.1989) which was published on 26.12.1996, the ranking of the Central Trade
Union Organizations are as under:
