Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, Justice R. C. Lahoti inaugurates the Headquarters of ICADR
The Chief Justice of India, Mr. Justice R. C. Lahoti inaugurated the Headquarters of International Centre for Alternative Dispute Resolution (ICADR) at Vasant Kunj Institutional Area, Phase –II, New Delhi here today. The Chief Guest at the function, Mr. Justice Y. K. Sabharwal, Judge, Supreme Court of India, Dr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission and Shri H. R. Bhardwaj, Union Minister for Law and Justice & Chairman, ICADR have addressed the dignitaries.
The International Centre for Alternative Dispute Resolution (ICADR) has planned to establish regional centres at all State Capitals in India with a view to spread Alternative Dispute Resolution Movement throughout the country. ICADR was established way back in 1995 with a view to develop alternative modes of dispute resolution by establishing facilities for providing settlement of disputes through arbitration, conciliation, mediation and negotiation etc. and lessening the increasing burden of Courts. The Centre was established following a resolution adopted on 4th December, 1993 by the Chief Ministers and the Chief Justices of State High Courts. The ICADR have already established two Regional Centres at Hyderabad and Bangalore with the financial and other support of the respective State Governments.
The main objectives of the ICADR are : to propagate, promote and popularize the settlement of domestic and International disputes by different modes of ADR; to establish facilities and provide administrative and other support services for holding conciliation, mediation and arbitration proceedings; to promote reform in the system of settlement of disputes and its healthy development within the framework of the social and economic needs of the community; to appoint conciliators, mediators, arbitrators and other ADR neutrals when so requested by the parties from among a panel of qualified and experienced ADR neutrals; to undertake training/teaching in ADR and related matters and to award diplomas, certificates and other academic or professional distinctions; to develop infrastructure for higher education and research in the field of ADR and arrange for fellowships, scholarships, stipends, etc. with a view to develop professionalism in ADR.
The ICADR have received International level arbitration case like the one between HRD Corporation, Marcus Oil Chemical Division, USA and Gas Authority of India Ltd., India.
The new building of ICADR inaugurated today is well equipped to provide facilities of International standard for conducting hearings of arbitration, mediation and conciliation cases. The building has three Court Rooms, Arbitrators Waiting Room, Secretarial Assistance, Xerox and Fax facilities etc. The Court Rooms are equipped with latest Public Address System and recording facilities to make the hearings easy and convenient.
