SECTION ON NFDC MOVIES OPENS WITH FILM ‘GANDHI’
The ‘NFDC Down The Ages’ Section at IFFI-06 got underway today with the screening of the much acclaimed film ‘Gandhi’, directed by Richard Attenborough. The function was attended by prominent actors cast in the film, namely, Ms. Rohini Hattangari, Shri Alyque Padamsee; costume designer Ms. Bhanu Athaiyya and Chairman, NFDC, Shri Manmohan Shetty were present.

Winner of eight Oscar Awards, the film spans fifty-six out of Gandhiji's 79 years. It starts with his days in South Africa, where he is seen as a young attorney, who is thrown out of a first class compartment in spite of having a valid ticket. Angered at this humiliation, Gandhiji decides to protest for the rights of Indians and other coloured people. It is here that he meets with his first success. His fame spreads to India and he is invited to return home to take part in the freedom struggle. On arrival, he is shocked at the poverty in the country and undertakes to travel all over the country to witness, at first hand, the atrocities of the British Empire. Gandhiji's struggle to win freedom for India through his non-violent approach, his belief that men are more good than evil and his spiritual ideas all form a part of this saga, the biography of a fascinating world leader -- both spiritual and political.

Under this section, six films will be screened. Other films are, Agantuk (Bengali) directed by Satyajit Ray, Mangamma (Malayalam), directed by T. V. Chandran, Marupakkam (Tamil), directed by K. S. Sethu Madhavan, Mirch Masala, directed by Ketan Mehta and Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, directed and Kundan Shah, both in Hindi.
