Conferment of the Rotary’s polio eradication Champion award on Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, union Minister for Health & Family Welfare
Since the Polio eradication programme was launched in 1988, a significant number of political leaders and individuals pledged commitment and spearheaded the campaign along with the global polio eradication partners. To honour these leaders, heads of State, health agency leaders and others who have made a significant contribution to the global eradication of polio, the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International established the Polio Eradication Champion award in 1995. The Award recognizes past achievements and the promise of continuing activity and improvement from these individuals to make the world Polio free.

Leaders who have been honoured with Rotary’s Polio Eradication Champion Award include past United States President William Jefferson Clinton, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, John Major and Tony Blair, First Lady of Egypt, Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, President of Angola Jose Eduardo dos Santos and Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul, Germany’s Minister of Economic Development and Cooperation, Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) Secretary-General, Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, the Gates foundation co-chair, Bill Gates Sr. and the Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh.

In recognition of the outstanding efforts made by Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss in controlling the polio cases in the country and the support provided for the polio eradication programmes in India, Rotary International has decided to confer this year’s Polio Eradication Champion Award to the Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss.
