Sontosh Mohan Dev Releases Book on ‘Empowering PSEs in India’
Shri Sontosh Mohan Dev, Minister for Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises released a book titled “Empowering Public Sector Enterprises in India” here today. The book has been brought out by the Department of Public Enterprises, and is the outcome of the proceedings of Chief Executives’ Conference on Public Sector Enterprises held on 8th March, 2007 in New Delhi.

The book contains the inaugural address of the Hon’ble Prime Minister and dwells on various critical issues before the public sector enterprises, such as, competition, diversification, autonomy and corporate governance. Among other things, the book discusses the challenges before the CPSEs during the 11th Plan period.

The book also contains the “Report of the Adhoc Group of Experts on Empowerment of Central Public Sector Enterprises” and addresses specific areas of issues of ownership by the Government, audit of Government companies, Constitutional issues etc.

Releasing the book, the Minister said that full managerial and commercial autonomy to profit making PSEs had been achieved to a large extent. Major PSEs, particularly the Navratnas are global players. Shri Dev however observed, although some PSEs transformed themselves into sound commercial enterprises capable of competing with the best in the world, getting listed on the stock exchanges and enhancing professionalism of the Board of Directors would have to be their primary tasks.

Dr. R.C. Panda, Secretary, Ministry Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises also spoke on this occasion.
